Total Resistance – Kälte, Bass und Widerstand aus Paris
Zwischen Coldwave, Post-Punk und Synthpunk
Manchmal braucht es keine große Geschichte. Zwei alte Freunde aus Paris, ein paar Synthesizer, eine Maschine für den Rhythmus, ein treibender Bass – und schon ist da dieser Sound, der nach kalten Straßen, Beton und ziemlich schlechter Laune klingt.
Total Resistance kommen aus Paris und sind seit 2022 unterwegs. Musikalisch bewegen sie sich irgendwo zwischen Coldwave, Post-Punk, New Wave, Synthpunk und Darkwave. Dazu kommen kantige Drum Machines, nervöse Basslinien und Synthesizer, die deutlich in Richtung der frühen elektronischen New Wave zeigen.
Und genau das funktioniert.
Total Resistance versuchen nicht, möglichst geschniegelt nach Gothic zu klingen. Ihre Musik hat Ecken. Sie darf punkig sein, darf schmutzig klingen und darf auch mal ordentlich nach vorne gehen.
Kalt, direkt und ohne viel Schnörkel
Auf ihrer ersten Veröffentlichung „No Brakes“ von 2023 trifft nervöser Post-Punk auf typische New-Wave-Synthesizer. Als Einflüsse nennen sie unter anderem New Order, Gang of Four und Gary Numan, aber auch jüngere Namen wie Lebanon Hanover und Molchat Doma.
Das hört man durchaus.
Aber Total Resistance sind keine Kopie dieser Bands. Sie nehmen diese Zutaten und machen daraus ihren eigenen kleinen Maschinenraum.
Bass nach vorne.
Drum Machine im Anschlag.
Synthesizer darüber.
Und dann diese Stimme, die nicht unbedingt darum bemüht ist, alles schön klingen zu lassen.
Das gefällt mir.
Musik für eine ziemlich kaputte Gegenwart
Auch thematisch bleiben Total Resistance nicht gerade im Sonnenschein.
Ihre Songs beschäftigen sich mit Krieg, gesellschaftlicher Kälte, wirtschaftlicher Gier, Umweltzerstörung und diesem Gefühl, dass die Welt irgendwie immer weiterläuft, obwohl längst ziemlich viel im Argen liegt. „Dancing Time“ bringt dieses Gefühl besonders deutlich zusammen: eine kaputte Welt draußen – und trotzdem dieser kurze Moment, in dem man einfach tanzt.
Das ist für mich ziemlich passend zur heutigen Darkwave-Szene.
Nicht nur Nostalgie.
Nicht nur schwarze Klamotten und alte Synthesizer.
Sondern auch die Frage, warum sich die Gegenwart manchmal selbst wie ein dystopischer Song anhört.
Und dann wird getanzt
Was ich an Total Resistance besonders mag: Trotz der düsteren Themen bleibt die Musik nicht im Selbstmitleid hängen.
Sie hat Bewegung.
Gerade die Kombination aus Bass und Drum Machine macht Tracks wie „Crash“, „Anxiety“, „Melody“ oder „Fascination“ ziemlich direkt.
Das ist Musik, die im Keller genauso funktionieren kann wie auf einem kleinen Darkwave-Floor.
2024 folgten unter anderem „Dancing Time“, „Daylight“, ein Cover von Taxi Girls „Aussi belle qu’une balle“ und „No Control“. 2025 kam „Never Surrender“ dazu.
Und auch live haben Total Resistance inzwischen über Paris hinaus Fuß gefasst. 2026 standen sie beispielsweise in Belgien mit Curtain und The Ultimate Dreamers auf der Bühne.
Mein Einstieg
Ich würde mit „No Brakes“ anfangen.
Danach „Dancing Time“ und „No Control“ hören.
Wer auf Coldwave, frühen New Wave, Post-Punk und elektronische Sounds steht, dürfte hier ziemlich schnell fündig werden.
Total Resistance sind für mich genau die Sorte Band, die man nachts entdeckt und sich fragt, warum man sie nicht schon früher gefunden hat.
Kalt, direkt, elektronisch – und mit ordentlich Widerstand im Bass.

Somewhere between Coldwave, Post-Punk and Synthpunk
Sometimes you don't need a big story.
Two old friends from Paris. A couple of synthesizers, a drum machine, a driving bassline – and suddenly you've got that sound that feels like cold streets, concrete and a pretty bad mood.
Total Resistance come from France and have been around since 2022. Their sound moves somewhere between Coldwave, Post-Punk, New Wave, Synthpunk and Darkwave. Add sharp drum machines, nervous basslines and analogue synths, and you get something that feels deliberately raw rather than polished.
And I like that.
Total Resistance don't seem interested in making everything sound perfectly clean or carefully packaged. Their music has edges. It can be punky, dirty and rough around the corners – and sometimes it simply needs to hit harder.
Cold, direct and without unnecessary decoration
Their debut release “No Brakes” from 2023 brings nervous Post-Punk together with classic New Wave electronics. Their influences range from New Order, Gang of Four and Gary Numan to more recent names such as Lebanon Hanover and Molchat Doma.
You can hear those references.
But Total Resistance don't simply copy them.
They take the ingredients and throw them into their own little electronic machine room.
Bass up front.
Drum machine pushing everything forward.
Synths filling the gaps.
And a voice that doesn't seem particularly interested in making everything sound pretty.
That's exactly what works for me.
Music for a pretty messed-up present
The darkness isn't only in the sound.
Total Resistance deal with subjects like war, social coldness, economic greed, environmental destruction and that familiar feeling that the world keeps moving even when everything around us seems to be falling apart.
“Dancing Time” captures that contradiction particularly well: the world outside may be a mess, but for a few minutes you can still dance.
And honestly, that feels very relevant to today's darkwave scene.
Not just nostalgia.
Not just black clothes and old synthesizers.
But music that actually reflects the present – even when that present sometimes sounds like a dystopian soundtrack.
And then you dance
One of the things I like most about Total Resistance is that they don't get stuck in their own darkness.
There is movement.
The combination of bass and drum machine gives tracks like “Crash”, “Anxiety”, “Melody” and “Fascination” a direct, physical energy.
This is the kind of music that can work in a dark basement just as easily as on a small darkwave dancefloor.
They continued developing their sound with releases such as “Dancing Time”, “Daylight”, “No Control” and their cover of Taxi Girl's “Aussi belle qu'une balle”, followed by “Never Surrender” in 2025.
And Total Resistance have also taken their music beyond Paris, appearing live in the European underground scene.
That's where I think this kind of music belongs anyway.
Small rooms. Dark lights. Loud bass.
No unnecessary bullshit.
Where to start
I'd start with “No Brakes”.
Then move on to “Dancing Time” and “No Control”.
If you are into Coldwave, early New Wave, Post-Punk and electronic underground sounds, there is a good chance you'll find something here.
For me, Total Resistance are exactly the kind of band you discover late at night and immediately wonder why you hadn't found them earlier.
Cold, direct, electronic – with plenty of resistance in the bass.
