eXcubitors
eXcubitors aus Marburg gehören für mich zu den interessanteren deutschen Projekten zwischen Synthpop, Darkwave, Futurepop und elektronischer Musik. Was mir dabei besonders gefällt, ist die Mischung aus eingängigen Melodien, treibenden Beats und einer teilweise sehr atmosphärischen, fast cineastischen Klangwelt.
Gegründet wurden eXcubitors 2006 von den Brüdern Sascha, Stephan und Thomas Viereck. Schon früh war zu erkennen, dass die Band nicht einfach klassischen Synthpop machen wollte. Elektronische Sounds und Synthesizer bilden zwar die Grundlage, gleichzeitig werden diese aber immer wieder mit dunkleren und atmosphärischen Elementen verbunden.
Zu den musikalischen Einflüssen gehören unter anderem Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk und Tears for Fears, aber auch elektronische Musik und Filmmusik. Gerade diese Verbindung finde ich bei eXcubitors interessant. Die Songs können durchaus auf die Tanzfläche gehören, haben aber gleichzeitig eine Atmosphäre, die weit über einen typischen Clubtrack hinausgeht.
Das erste Album „Auferstehung aus Ruinen“ erschien 2007. Mit „Operation Observation“ folgte 2009 das zweite Album. Bereits hier entwickelte die Band ihren eigenen Stil weiter und verband elektronische Melodien mit teilweise nachdenklichen und gesellschaftlich geprägten Themen.
Nach einer längeren Pause meldeten sich eXcubitors 2014 mit „Wächter“ zurück. Der Titel passt dabei ziemlich gut zur Band, denn der Name „eXcubitor“ stammt aus dem Lateinischen und bedeutet sinngemäß „Wächter“. Auch inhaltlich beschäftigt sich die Band immer wieder mit gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen, menschlichem Verhalten und persönlichen Erfahrungen.
2016 kam Ronny Strehmann zur Band und übernahm neben Stephan Viereck teilweise den Gesang. Gleichzeitig war er auch im Bereich Videoproduktion aktiv. Diese Besetzung bestand einige Jahre, bevor Strehmann die Band 2019 wieder verließ.
Mit „Another Dimension“ erschien 2021 das fünfte Studioalbum. Für mich war das ein wichtiger Schritt in der Entwicklung von eXcubitors. Die Bezeichnung „Cinematic Synthpop“, die die Band für ihren Stil verwendet, beschreibt die Musik meiner Meinung nach ziemlich gut.
Synthpop bildet weiterhin die Basis, wird aber um weitläufige elektronische Flächen, atmosphärische Sounds und teilweise fast filmische Momente erweitert. Dadurch entsteht ein Sound, der gleichzeitig modern, melancholisch und tanzbar sein kann.
Songs wie „Stranger“ zeigen diese Mischung besonders gut. Eingängige Melodien treffen auf elektronische Beats und eine dunklere Atmosphäre. Gleichzeitig beschäftigen sich die Texte immer wieder mit Themen, die über typische Liebes- oder Clubgeschichten hinausgehen.
Ende 2023 kam Heiko Schwab zur Band. Seitdem ist er unter anderem als Co-Produzent tätig und unterstützt eXcubitors live an den Keyboards. Damit wurde die aktuelle Besetzung noch einmal musikalisch erweitert.
In dieser Phase begann auch eine neue und sehr aktive Live-Zeit für die Band. Songs wie „This Is the Way“ und „United“ entwickelten sich zu wichtigen Stücken des aktuellen Programms. Besonders „United“ zeigt eine etwas positivere und gemeinschaftlichere Seite von eXcubitors.
2025 folgte „Burning Bridges“, ein Song, der für mich sehr gut zu dem aktuellen Sound der Band passt. Treibende elektronische Beats, Synthesizer und eine eingängige Melodie verbinden sich mit einer eher nachdenklichen Grundstimmung.
Kurz darauf erschien das Album „Beyond the Silence“. Für mich gehört es zu den interessantesten Veröffentlichungen von eXcubitors. Das Album beschäftigt sich mit persönlicher Zerrissenheit, gesellschaftlichem Druck, Veränderung, Selbstreflexion und gleichzeitig auch mit Hoffnung.
Musikalisch wird die cineastische Seite hier noch stärker hervorgehoben. Atmosphärische Synthesizer treffen auf treibende Beats und teilweise tiefgründige Texte. Dazu kommen verschiedene Remixe, die noch einmal zeigen, wie gut der Sound von eXcubitors auch innerhalb der elektronischen Szene funktioniert.
Auch 2026 bleibt die Band aktiv. Mit Songs wie „Ordinary Sin“, „Let Me Dance“ und „Feel Again“ wird der eingeschlagene Weg weitergeführt. Gerade „Let Me Dance“ verbindet Synthpop mit Darkwave- und Futurepop-Elementen und bringt gleichzeitig wieder diese typische Mischung aus Atmosphäre und Tanzbarkeit mit.
Live setzen eXcubitors nicht nur auf die Musik. Licht, Laser und Projektionen gehören ebenfalls zum Konzept. Das passt für mich sehr gut zum cineastischen Anspruch der Band und macht die Auftritte zu mehr als einem normalen elektronischen Konzert.
Was ich an eXcubitors besonders mag, ist die Balance zwischen Melodie, Atmosphäre und Tanzbarkeit. Die Musik ist eindeutig im Synthpop verwurzelt, bleibt aber nicht bei einfachen Clubtracks stehen. Immer wieder gibt es dunklere und atmosphärische Momente, die den Songs mehr Tiefe geben.
Dabei zeigen eXcubitors für mich auch, dass Synthpop nicht einfach eine Wiederholung der 80er-Jahre sein muss. Die Einflüsse von Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk und Tears for Fears sind zwar hörbar, aber die Band hat daraus über die Jahre ihren eigenen Stil entwickelt.
eXcubitors stehen für Cinematic Synthpop aus Deutschland – melodisch, atmosphärisch, elektronisch und tanzbar. Musik zwischen Synthpop, Darkwave und Futurepop, mit treibenden Beats, dunklen Klangwelten und einer deutlichen Liebe zu großen cineastischen Soundscapes.

eXcubitors – Band Profile
eXcubitors from Marburg, Germany, are, for me, one of the more interesting German projects somewhere between Synthpop, Darkwave, Futurepop, and electronic music. What I particularly like about them is the combination of catchy melodies, driving beats, and an atmospheric, almost cinematic sound.
The band was founded in 2006 by brothers Sascha, Stephan, and Thomas Viereck. From the beginning, it was clear that eXcubitors were not simply interested in making classic Synthpop. Electronic sounds and synthesizers form the foundation, but they are repeatedly combined with darker and more atmospheric elements.
Their influences include artists such as Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, and Tears for Fears, as well as electronic music and film scores. I find this combination particularly interesting. The songs can definitely work on the dancefloor, but at the same time they have an atmosphere that goes far beyond the typical club track.
The first album, Auferstehung aus Ruinen, was released in 2007, followed by Operation Observation in 2009. Even at this early stage, the band was developing its own style, combining electronic melodies with more reflective and socially inspired themes.
After a longer break, eXcubitors returned in 2014 with Wächter. The title actually fits the band quite well, as the name “eXcubitor” comes from Latin and can roughly be translated as “watchman” or “guardian.” The band has repeatedly explored themes such as social developments, human behavior, and personal experiences.
In 2016, Ronny Strehmann joined the band and shared vocal duties with Stephan Viereck. He was also involved in the band's video production. This lineup remained together for several years before Strehmann left the band in 2019.
With Another Dimension, the band's fifth studio album, eXcubitors took another important step in their development in 2021. For me, the band's own description of their music as “Cinematic Synthpop” fits particularly well.
Synthpop remains the foundation, but it is expanded with spacious electronic layers, atmospheric sounds, and almost cinematic moments. The result is a sound that can be modern, melancholic, and danceable at the same time.
Tracks such as “Stranger” show this combination particularly well. Catchy melodies meet electronic beats and a darker atmosphere. At the same time, the lyrics often deal with subjects that go beyond typical love songs or club stories.
At the end of 2023, Heiko Schwab joined the band. He has since been involved as a co-producer and also supports eXcubitors live on keyboards. This added another important musical element to the current lineup.
This period also marked the beginning of a new and particularly active live phase for the band. Songs such as “This Is the Way” and “United” became important parts of the current live set. “United” in particular shows a somewhat more positive and community-focused side of eXcubitors.
In 2025, “Burning Bridges” followed. For me, the track fits very well with the band's current sound. Driving electronic beats, synthesizers, and a catchy melody are combined with a more reflective mood.
The album Beyond the Silence followed soon after. For me, it is one of the most interesting releases in the band's catalogue so far. The album deals with personal conflict, social pressure, change, self-reflection, and, at the same time, hope.
Musically, the cinematic side of eXcubitors becomes even more noticeable here. Atmospheric synthesizers meet driving beats and sometimes deeper lyrical themes. The various remixes also show how naturally the band's sound fits into the wider electronic music scene.
eXcubitors have remained active in 2026 as well. Tracks such as “Ordinary Sin,” “Let Me Dance,” and “Feel Again” continue along the same path. “Let Me Dance” in particular combines Synthpop with Darkwave and Futurepop elements while once again bringing together atmosphere and danceability.
Live, eXcubitors are not focused on music alone. Lights, lasers, and projections are also part of the concept. For me, this fits perfectly with the band's cinematic approach and turns the shows into more than a standard electronic concert.
What I particularly like about eXcubitors is the balance between melody, atmosphere, and danceability. The music is clearly rooted in Synthpop, but it does not stop at straightforward club tracks. There are always darker and more atmospheric moments that give the songs additional depth.
For me, eXcubitors also show that Synthpop does not have to be a simple repetition of the 1980s. The influence of Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, and Tears for Fears can certainly be heard, but over the years the band has developed these influences into something of its own.
eXcubitors stand for Cinematic Synthpop from Germany — melodic, atmospheric, electronic, and danceable. Music somewhere between Synthpop, Darkwave, and Futurepop, driven by powerful beats, dark soundscapes, and a clear love for large cinematic atmospheres.
