Agent Side Grinder

Agent Side Grinder – Band Profile

Agent Side Grinder from Sweden are one of those bands for me that show just how well Post-Punk, Industrial, Minimal Wave, and electronic music can work together without losing their own identity. Since forming in Stockholm in 2005, the band has continued to evolve while creating a sound that can be cold, driving, melancholic, and incredibly atmospheric at the same time.

What stands out to me is the combination of analogue and electronic sounds. Synthesizers, sequencers, and electronic rhythms meet bass, guitars, and sometimes rather unusual sources of sound. On top of this comes a distinctive vocal style that gives the music an additional, almost theatrical intensity.

This combination of cold electronics and human emotion is what makes Agent Side Grinder particularly interesting to me. The music can feel distant and mechanical, but at the same time it can become surprisingly emotional and intense.

The band's early releases were strongly influenced by Post-Punk, Industrial, and Minimal Synth. Over the years, these influences developed into a much more individual sound. Agent Side Grinder have never simply tried to recreate a particular retro style. Instead, they take elements from the past and combine them with modern electronic production.

Albums such as The Transcendence, Hardware, and Alkimia show this development quite clearly. For me, Hardware from 2017 is one of the releases where the band really strengthened its characteristic sound.

With A/X, released in 2019, the electronic side became even more prominent while the band's dark and melancholic atmosphere remained intact. The sound can be quite minimal at times, but still feels extremely powerful.

Another important step came with Jack Vegas in 2023. For me, this album shows just how far Agent Side Grinder have developed from their early roots without completely abandoning them.

The music feels more modern and, in places, even more danceable, while still remaining dark and distinctive. Synthesizers and electronic sequences are more prominent, with bass and percussion providing a driving foundation.

What I particularly like about Agent Side Grinder is their atmosphere. Their songs often feel nocturnal, urban, and slightly dystopian. I can easily imagine this music playing in a dark club as well as being part of the soundtrack to some futuristic film.

At the same time, it is not only about electronic sounds. The analogue instruments and sometimes rougher textures keep the production from becoming too polished. This gives the songs a certain rawness and directness.

I also find Agent Side Grinder particularly interesting as a live band. The combination of electronic equipment, instruments, and their distinctive visual aesthetic makes the performances feel like more than just a standard concert. The music works equally well on stage and on the dancefloor.

What I appreciate most about the band is their ability to combine darkness and movement. Agent Side Grinder can sound melancholic and cold, but many of their tracks also have a strong rhythmic pull that makes it difficult to stand still.

For me, they are therefore one of the more interesting Swedish acts somewhere between Post-Punk, Industrial, Darkwave, and electronic music. They combine the atmosphere of early electronic and Post-Punk underground music with modern production and turn it into something that unmistakably sounds like Agent Side Grinder.

Agent Side Grinder stand for dark electronic music from Sweden — cold, hypnotic, melancholic, and driving. A combination of Post-Punk, Industrial, Minimal Wave, and Darkwave that feels both retro and modern, especially when you simply let yourself get carried away by the beats and the dark soundscapes.

LOWSUNDAY

Die Songs „You're So Wired“, „Shattered“, „Someone To Talk To“, „This Is Not Heaven“ und „Don't Want To Dream Again“ wirken intensiver und beschäftigen sich stärker mit Isolation, inneren Konflikten und dunkleren Gedanken.

LOWSUNDAY – Band Profile

LOWSUNDAY from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, are one of those bands for me where you can immediately tell that they are not simply trying to copy whatever happens to be popular at the moment. Their roots go back to the 1990s, while their music moves somewhere between Post-Punk, Shoegaze, Darkwave, and Dream Pop.

The band was originally formed in 1994 under the name Low Sunday Ghost Machine. At the center of the project is Shane Sahene, whose vocals and guitar work have played a major role in shaping the LOWSUNDAY sound. The self-titled debut followed in 1996 before the band eventually shortened its name to LOWSUNDAY.

What I particularly like about LOWSUNDAY is the combination of dark guitars, melancholic melodies, and an atmosphere that can feel almost weightless at times. There is a certain heaviness to the music, but it never feels overloaded. At the same time, the songs have enough melody to avoid disappearing into a wall of guitars and effects.

The influence of bands such as The Sound, Bauhaus, The Chameleons, and Echo & the Bunnymen can certainly be heard. But LOWSUNDAY do not sound like a copy of any of them. Instead, they take elements from Post-Punk, Gothic, and Alternative and turn them into something of their own.

An important part of the band's early history was Elesgiem, originally released in 1999. For me, the album is a great way to discover the musical world of LOWSUNDAY from that period. Dark guitars, atmospheric textures, and melancholic vocals come together in a way that still works today.

After that, things became quieter for a while. LOWSUNDAY took an extended break and largely disappeared from the active music scene. That makes their later return even more interesting to me.

In 2024, Elesgiem was reissued as a remastered edition. In 2025, the debut album Low Sunday Ghost Machine also received a new remastered release. This not only made the older material available again, but also gave the band's early history a new context.

The White EP, released in 2025, made things even more interesting for me. After such a long break, LOWSUNDAY returned with new material. Instead of simply trying to recreate the sound of the 1990s, the band combines its old influences with a more modern production and new ideas.

Tracks such as “Nevver,” “You Lost Yourself,” and “Love Language” show this development quite well. The music feels familiar while still sounding fresh. I particularly like this connection between the band's past and present.

In 2026, the Black EP followed, representing the much darker side of this new chapter. Tracks such as “You're So Wired,” “Shattered,” “Someone To Talk To,” “This Is Not Heaven,” and “Don't Want To Dream Again” feel more intense and explore themes of isolation, inner conflict, and darker emotions.

While the White EP feels somewhat more open and brighter to me, the Black EP goes much deeper into the darker atmosphere. Guitars, rhythm, and synthesizers work together to create a sound that feels both familiar and contemporary.

What I find particularly interesting about LOWSUNDAY is that despite all the Shoegaze and Darkwave elements, the band still puts a lot of emphasis on melody and songwriting. The music does not have to be complicated or extreme. It is the atmosphere and the small details that make the songs interesting.

For me, LOWSUNDAY are also a good example of how music from the 1990s does not automatically have to sound dated. The band's roots are clearly connected to that period, but the current releases do not feel like pure nostalgia.

Instead, LOWSUNDAY take their own history and continue to develop it. That makes their return much more interesting to me than simply trying to recreate an old sound.

What I particularly like is this combination of melancholy, atmosphere, and guitars. There is a certain darkness running through the music, but there are always beautiful and catchy moments as well. That balance is what makes LOWSUNDAY stand out to me.

LOWSUNDAY stand for atmospheric Darkwave somewhere between Post-Punk, Shoegaze, and Dream Pop — melancholic, dark, dreamy, and melodic. A band with roots in the 1990s that has returned after a long break and shows that their sound still works remarkably well today.

Zabriskie

2025 folgte die EP „All Things Become Light“.

Songs wie „Changes“, „Twilight“ und „Just For Now“ zeigen unterschiedliche Facetten der Band.

Zabriskie – Band Profile

Zabriskie from Zurich, Switzerland, are one of those bands for me where you do not simply listen to a song, but quickly find yourself drawn into their own atmosphere. Musically, they move between Shoegaze, Dream Pop, Psychedelic Rock, and Post-Rock, combining dreamy guitars with melancholic melodies and a very dense, atmospheric sound.

At the center of the band is Alex Herter, responsible for vocals, guitar, and synthesizers. He is joined by Andreas Vischer on bass and Andy Hofstetter on drums. Even though Zabriskie are a trio, they create a surprisingly full and spacious sound.

The band's history goes back quite a few years. Alex Herter and Andreas Vischer already knew each other from earlier musical projects and played together in a grunge band back in the 1990s. Andy Hofstetter later became part of the lineup that developed into today's Zabriskie.

What I particularly like about Zabriskie is the way they use guitars. It is not simply about becoming as loud as possible. Instead, reverb, delay, and different layers are used to build an atmosphere. The guitars can sound warm, dreamy, melancholic, and sometimes almost otherworldly.

The bass and drums provide the necessary foundation. I find this combination especially interesting: on one side, the guitars and vocals seem to float through the space, while on the other, the rhythm section keeps everything grounded.

The band's roots are clearly in Shoegaze and Dream Pop, but there are also elements of Post-Rock, Psychedelic Rock, and Singer-Songwriter music. This gives the songs a strong emotional character while allowing plenty of room for expansive soundscapes.

In 2023, the album Darklight was released. For me, the title fits Zabriskie's music very well. Light and darkness are constantly close together. The album deals with themes such as fear, self-doubt, and desire, while the music surrounds these subjects with a dreamy and melancholic atmosphere.

The EP All Things Become Light followed in 2025. For me, this release shows very clearly how Zabriskie have continued to develop their own sound. Shoegaze meets Dream Pop and psychedelic guitars, while bass and drums provide a surprisingly powerful foundation.

Tracks such as “Changes,” “Twilight,” and “Just For Now” reveal different sides of the band. Later, “South Pacific” and “Once” continued this musical development.

In 2026, the band continued with the EP Ghosts In Time. For me, it feels like a natural progression of the Zabriskie sound. The music remains atmospheric and dreamy, but at the same time feels even more spacious and intense.

I particularly like the fact that the vocals do not always have to be right in the foreground. At times, they almost become part of the instrumentation itself, blending into the overall soundscape. This creates that slightly detached and dreamlike feeling that works so well with Shoegaze.

I can also imagine this music working particularly well live. The songs have plenty of room for dynamics and atmosphere, slowly building before the guitars and rhythm section suddenly become much more intense. These changes between quiet and powerful moments are an important part of what makes Zabriskie interesting to me.

What I particularly like about the band is their melancholy without complete darkness. Zabriskie can sound dark and reflective, but the music never feels hopeless. There are always warmer and almost floating moments that provide a contrast to the darker side.

For me, Zabriskie are a good example of how diverse modern Shoegaze can be. The band clearly embraces the classic ingredients of the genre, but they are not simply trying to recreate the sound of the past. Instead, they have developed their own combination of guitars, atmosphere, psychedelia, and emotional songwriting.

Zabriskie stand for atmospheric Shoegaze from Zurich — dreamy, melancholic, psychedelic, and powerful at the same time. Music somewhere between Shoegaze, Dream Pop, Post-Rock, and Psychedelic Rock, with reverberated guitars, deep bass, and an atmosphere of their own — the kind of sound you can easily get lost in.

eXcubitors

Kurz darauf erschien das Album „Beyond the Silence“.

 eXcubitors – Band Profile

eXcubitors from Marburg, Germany, are, for me, one of the more interesting German projects somewhere between Synthpop, Darkwave, Futurepop, and electronic music. What I particularly like about them is the combination of catchy melodies, driving beats, and an atmospheric, almost cinematic sound.

The band was founded in 2006 by brothers Sascha, Stephan, and Thomas Viereck. From the beginning, it was clear that eXcubitors were not simply interested in making classic Synthpop. Electronic sounds and synthesizers form the foundation, but they are repeatedly combined with darker and more atmospheric elements.

Their influences include artists such as Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, and Tears for Fears, as well as electronic music and film scores. I find this combination particularly interesting. The songs can definitely work on the dancefloor, but at the same time they have an atmosphere that goes far beyond the typical club track.

The first album, Auferstehung aus Ruinen, was released in 2007, followed by Operation Observation in 2009. Even at this early stage, the band was developing its own style, combining electronic melodies with more reflective and socially inspired themes.

After a longer break, eXcubitors returned in 2014 with Wächter. The title actually fits the band quite well, as the name “eXcubitor” comes from Latin and can roughly be translated as “watchman” or “guardian.” The band has repeatedly explored themes such as social developments, human behavior, and personal experiences.

In 2016, Ronny Strehmann joined the band and shared vocal duties with Stephan Viereck. He was also involved in the band's video production. This lineup remained together for several years before Strehmann left the band in 2019.

With Another Dimension, the band's fifth studio album, eXcubitors took another important step in their development in 2021. For me, the band's own description of their music as “Cinematic Synthpop” fits particularly well.

Synthpop remains the foundation, but it is expanded with spacious electronic layers, atmospheric sounds, and almost cinematic moments. The result is a sound that can be modern, melancholic, and danceable at the same time.

Tracks such as “Stranger” show this combination particularly well. Catchy melodies meet electronic beats and a darker atmosphere. At the same time, the lyrics often deal with subjects that go beyond typical love songs or club stories.

At the end of 2023, Heiko Schwab joined the band. He has since been involved as a co-producer and also supports eXcubitors live on keyboards. This added another important musical element to the current lineup.

This period also marked the beginning of a new and particularly active live phase for the band. Songs such as “This Is the Way” and “United” became important parts of the current live set. “United” in particular shows a somewhat more positive and community-focused side of eXcubitors.

In 2025, “Burning Bridges” followed. For me, the track fits very well with the band's current sound. Driving electronic beats, synthesizers, and a catchy melody are combined with a more reflective mood.

The album Beyond the Silence followed soon after. For me, it is one of the most interesting releases in the band's catalogue so far. The album deals with personal conflict, social pressure, change, self-reflection, and, at the same time, hope.

Musically, the cinematic side of eXcubitors becomes even more noticeable here. Atmospheric synthesizers meet driving beats and sometimes deeper lyrical themes. The various remixes also show how naturally the band's sound fits into the wider electronic music scene.

eXcubitors have remained active in 2026 as well. Tracks such as “Ordinary Sin,” “Let Me Dance,” and “Feel Again” continue along the same path. “Let Me Dance” in particular combines Synthpop with Darkwave and Futurepop elements while once again bringing together atmosphere and danceability.

Live, eXcubitors are not focused on music alone. Lights, lasers, and projections are also part of the concept. For me, this fits perfectly with the band's cinematic approach and turns the shows into more than a standard electronic concert.

What I particularly like about eXcubitors is the balance between melody, atmosphere, and danceability. The music is clearly rooted in Synthpop, but it does not stop at straightforward club tracks. There are always darker and more atmospheric moments that give the songs additional depth.

For me, eXcubitors also show that Synthpop does not have to be a simple repetition of the 1980s. The influence of Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, and Tears for Fears can certainly be heard, but over the years the band has developed these influences into something of its own.

eXcubitors stand for Cinematic Synthpop from Germany — melodic, atmospheric, electronic, and danceable. Music somewhere between Synthpop, Darkwave, and Futurepop, driven by powerful beats, dark soundscapes, and a clear love for large cinematic atmospheres.
