GHOST COP

A Shot in the Dark (2023).

GHOST COP

Darkwave, Post-Punk and Synthpop between urban dystopia and horror-movie atmosphere

When the Night Gets Its Own Soundtrack

Some music sounds as if it has fallen straight out of a forgotten movie from the eighties. Empty streets, flickering neon signs, strange figures lurking in the shadows, and somewhere in the distance, a machine that should have been switched off a long time ago. That's the kind of world GHOST COP from New York inhabit. The duo of Lucy Swope and Sean Dack combine Darkwave, Post-Punk and Synthpop with electronic coldness and the atmosphere of old horror and science-fiction films. But this isn't just about nostalgia. GHOST COP take familiar sounds and lead them into their own dark present.

Between Synthesizers and Shadows

GHOST COP work with driving beats, dark synthesizers and melodies that move somewhere between catchy and unsettling. At times, the sound feels cool and detached; at others, it becomes surprisingly anthemic. Add vocoders, electronic rhythms and a fondness for the slightly disturbing atmosphere of a good horror film, and you get music that doesn't need something jumping out of the shadows every five minutes to make its point.

What draws me to this sound is the combination of controlled electronics and a certain cinematic exaggeration. The music is allowed to feel big without becoming bombastic. It can make you dance, tell a story and leave you with an uneasy feeling all at once.

A World of B-Movies and Future Anxieties

GHOST COP draw inspiration from the darker corners of vintage electronic pop, B-movies and cyberpunk. It makes sense. All three deal with realities that have come apart at the seams, artificial identities and futures that may have already begun.

Their early self-titled EP, released in 2015, already pointed in this direction. With One Weird Trick (2018), the project continued to develop its sound, followed by A Shot in the Dark in 2023. The album Trouble, released in 2024, brings together many of the elements that define GHOST COP: dark electronics, Post-Punk energy and songs that refuse to choose between the dancefloor and a dark trip inside your own head.

Trouble – When the Darkness Stays With You

With Trouble, GHOST COP deliver a sound that doesn't rely on atmosphere alone. The songs have movement and a strong pop sensibility without abandoning their dark foundations. “Problems” captures this combination particularly well: a driving track that carries a sense of inner turmoil and relationship tension beneath its energy.

“A Shot in the Dark” also shows how effectively electronic coldness and melodic tension can work together. GHOST COP aren't simply interested in creating dark surfaces. Their music becomes most compelling when something human begins to show through the layers of synthesizers and beats.

GHOST COP and the Dark Music Scene

For me, GHOST COP belong to a generation of projects that don't treat Darkwave and Post-Punk as historical costumes. The influences are clearly there, but this isn't about simply recreating the past. Instead, the duo build a sound that could work just as well in a dark club as over the closing credits of a dystopian film.

They remain open to electronic pop structures without slipping into something polished and forgettable. If you like your Darkwave mixed with Synthpop, cyberpunk and a touch of horror-movie atmosphere, there's plenty here to get lost in during the small hours.

My Starting Point

If you're new to GHOST COP, start with Trouble (2024). It offers a good introduction to the duo's combination of driving electronic music, dark atmosphere and memorable melodies. From there, go back to One Weird Trick (2018) and A Shot in the Dark (2023). If you prefer things a little more cinematic and cold, their self-titled EP from 2015 is also worth exploring.

GHOST COP provide the soundtrack to a night when the neon lights are flickering and the city isn't quite as asleep as it should be.

Dark, electronic and full of cinematic tension – GHOST COP turn the night into a place where you might want to stay a little longer.
