KISS OF THE WHIP – Dunkle Elektronik mit Biss

kiss of the whip

We're Not Here

2020 erschien We're Not Here über Cold Transmission Music.

Genau diese Kombination macht KISS OF THE WHIP für mich interessant.

Baltimore

Mein Einstieg

Ich würde mit We're Not Here anfangen und danach zurück zu New Lows gehen. “Circle of Knives” zeigt die härtere, elektronischere Seite, während “Be Mine” die melodischere und emotionalere Seite von KISS OF THE WHIP deutlich macht.

KISS OF THE WHIP – Dark Electronics With Teeth

Darkwave, Post-Punk, Synthwave and Dark Electro from Baltimore

KISS OF THE WHIP is the project of Montreal-born musician and producer Tristan Victor, now based in Baltimore. The project was founded in 2017 – and even the name fits pretty well with what happens musically: dark, electronic, a little dangerous and still surprisingly melodic.

For me, KISS OF THE WHIP belongs to those projects where Darkwave doesn't simply sound like a copy of its old influences. There is much more going on. Post-Punk, Synthwave, Dark Electro and elements of EBM meet a certain heaviness that may also have something to do with Victor's musical background. Before KISS OF THE WHIP, he played in metal bands and later found his way back to his own songwriting through Goth and Darkwave.

Between Darkwave and Electronics

The first two albums, Like Love Only Real from 2018 and New Lows from 2019, established the foundation of the project. The official description points to Darkwave, Post-Punk and Dark Electro as central influences, while Bandcamp also lists Coldwave, Synthpop and Synthwave.

What stands out is that the music never really sits still. The synths and electronic beats push the songs forward, while guitars and vocals repeatedly bring in something rougher and more human.

Tracks like “Circle of Knives” show this harder direction particularly well. The song has been described as being inspired by old-school EBM, and for me it is one of those tracks where KISS OF THE WHIP works especially well between Darkwave and electronic aggression.

We're Not Here

We're Not Here was released in 2020 through Cold Transmission Music. For me, this is an important point in the development of the project. The songs become more emotional and melodic, while also feeling larger in their arrangements. Dramatic song structures meet electronic grooves and that characteristic KISS OF THE WHIP combination of darkness and melody.

The title track deals with isolation and fits remarkably well into its time. But the album also works independently from that particular context. It is about closeness, loss, devotion and connection – personal themes that Victor doesn't hide behind a purely genre-driven aesthetic.

Between Coldness and Emotion

This combination is exactly what makes KISS OF THE WHIP interesting to me. The production can feel cold and mechanical, but the songs are anything but emotionless.

There is even a certain romantic side at times. “Be Mine” is a good example. Other tracks push much more aggressively forward. That tension between emotional openness and electronic heaviness runs through the project as a whole.

Baltimore

For me, KISS OF THE WHIP belongs to an international dark-electronic scene where geographical boundaries have become almost irrelevant. Baltimore is the starting point, but musically the project clearly connects with a scene that is just as much at home in Europe as it is in the United States.

The releases and collaborations with other artists from the Darkwave and Coldwave scene show that connection. The collaboration with L'Avenir is particularly interesting, resulting in the 2023 split release. The record was tagged with Coldwave, Darkwave, Minimal Wave and Post-Punk.

My Starting Point

I would start with We're Not Here and then go back to New Lows. “Circle of Knives” shows the harder, more electronic side, while “Be Mine” brings out the more melodic and emotional side of KISS OF THE WHIP.

If you don't see Darkwave, Synthwave, Post-Punk and EBM as completely separate boxes, but rather enjoy hearing what happens when those boundaries begin to disappear, KISS OF THE WHIP should definitely be on your radar.

Dark electronics, driving beats and enough emotion to make sure the machines don't take control.
